The Hotel Majestic
A nineteenth-century chandelier from the ballroom of the former Hotel Majestic in Paris hangs in the main gallery. The prodigious lamp presided over a succession of military and diplomatic administrations based in the hotel building and, in 1973, witnessed the Paris Peace Accords, which ended conflict in Vietnam.
“A funerary air prevails at Danh Vo’s exhibition, “Where the Lions Are.” The galleries are resoundingly silent, sparsely hung with unobtrusive work. There are objects serving as remembrances of French missionaries to Indochina, a relic from a decapitated saint, branches used to mark a (now-lost) grave, and a tomb-shaped sculpture dedicated to the artist’s late grandmother.”
