Manly Melancholy

One of the coolest exhibitions in town, or so I’m told, is the joint show by the artist Christian Schoeler and Another Man magazine at Modern Art on the still gritty warehouse stretch on Vyner Street.
This latest series of canvases by Schoeler — images featured in the new issue of Another Man — is a collaboration with the stylist Alister Mackie (the magazine’s creative director) and Mackie’s former flat-mate, the Berlin-based photographer Benjamin Alexander Huseby.
The 30-year-old Schoeler is best known for his melancholy, painterly take on contemporary fashion-magazine photography, an approach that allows him to tap in the emotive qualities of his male subjects and not just their physical attributes.
