The Great Canne Comeback
Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus stars Heath Ledger in his final role.
The storyline couldn’t be more perfect, crafted from a script befitting a high-concept Hollywood blockbuster that goes something like this:
Down on the Riviera, the Cannes film festival is braced for its bloodiest year in decades as the recession bites, the casinos stand empty and the champagne is replaced with sparkling rosé.
Just as despair is about to permanently settle in, changing forevermore the fates and fortunes of this illustrious port of call for the wealthy and not so, a glimmer of hope on the horizon.
As though summoned by the Czar of Canne’s Cinema past, a coterie of heroes and heroines, art-house darlings with time on their hands and comebacks in their heart, are taking their rightful place among the throngs of paparazzi to chivalrously save the day.
It’s “that good” says the official lineup for this year’s event which reads like a festival hall of fame. No modest group this, the festival promises the cinematic royalty of former Palme d’Or winners such as Quentin Tarantino, Jane Campion, Lars von Trier and Ken Loach, and old faithfuls like Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodóvar, Gaspar Noé and Ang Lee. Variety magazine hails it as “Cannes’s biggest heavyweight auteur smackdown in recent years”. (An industry rag, Variety is understandably prone to excessive bouts of gush).
