Tree Scapes

The work of Myoung Ho Lee has been featured here before but with his first solo exhibit premiering in the US this week, I wanted to draw attention again to this new artist whose landscape canvases of trees is capturing world wide attention. Deservedly so.
His methods are not only artistic, but theatrical and structural befitting any elaborate film or Broadway production where crews and machinery are vital to the end result. It brings to mind the environmental works of Christo in seeing familiar landscapes in new ways.
Myoung photographs solitary trees framed against white canvas backdrops in the middle of natural landscapes. Once completed, he enlists the support of a production crew and heavy cranes to install the large canvases that span approximately 60 by 45 feet. Minor components of the canvas support system, such as ropes or bars, are later removed from the photograph through minimal digital retouching, creating the illusion that the backdrop is floating behind the tree.
