Barbie’s Debut

“Barbie, Beautiful Barbie,
I’ll make believe I’m you.”

Barbie’s network debut, 1959, or how little girls grew into women with eating disorders, diet addictions and pathetically poor self esteem.

  1. Wow, I was born in 1959, and I grew up with a whole entourage of Barbie Dolls. I still have them to this day. The two cases, along with one or two of the dolls and some of the clothes that I have are probably from 1963 or even earlier. It’s all probably worth something by now – the dolls, the cases and the clothes. Sounds like maybe I should sell it all on e-bay!

  2. Nah, it really wasn’t Barbie who caused body confusion – we knew she wasn’t real – hey, she was plastic and we could pull her apart. She was a toy and she had great clothes. It was the ads in magazines we believed. Blame it on Madison Ave, not Barbie.

    • Pat,

Agreed. In fact, it was the television ad that personified the idolization and fantasy of being like Barbie, which was why I included lyrics of the song, “Beautiful Barbie … I’ll make believe I’m you.”
She was more a grownup girl or a young woman than a doll and inspired little girls everywhere
to mimic and duplicate, which is what kids normally do.
