Winter Light Redux

This beautiful stillness is taken from Janet Blyberg who rightly calls it ‘Winter Light.’ It was the Dutch masters who were noted for their treatment of light in their paintings, imbuing their work with not only a meticulous sensibility, but imparting a valued lesson in morality as well.

Paintings depicting aspects of the natural world were so characteristic of the Netherlands that, during the seventeenth century, the Dutch words stilleven and landschap were adopted into English as “still life” and “landscape.” These incredible illusions of space, solidity, texture, and light often assume the role of memento mori (“a memento of mortality”)—a reminder that life is fleeting.

  1. I have studied dutch painters for years. There is so much beyond what is on the canvas. Every stroke conveys a philosophy. Beautiful.

  2. What a lovely and thoughtful post. Thank you for the mention!
