Retro Lingerie

Like a lot of aesthetes I know, I am a serious vintage hound. I have a closet full of dresses from all eras — from sheer slips and crinoline confections to simple calico frocks. But while slipping into a prom queen’s dress from 1950 is a thrill, the thought of stepping into said prom queen’s knickers is somehow less appealing. Still, those prim, generously cut lingerie sets are so smart I have always wondered why someone doesn’t just do them anew.

Well, they have! This great set [see photo next page] can be found at Topshop. The bra is modest enough (and cool enough with hook and eye closures) to wear under the sheerest of dresses and promises just enough beguile for a nice slow reveal under the wooliest of sweaters. While I may not be daring enough to walk around with my knickers fully exposed, {I might be persuaded by Don Draper} I could definitely see wearing the briefs under a pencil skirt with the high waist peeking out for that slyly titillating “Mad Men” look.
