Touting the Type-Writer
On this day 140 years ago, (give or take a few; it was actually June 21, the summer soltice) Christopher Latham Sholes received a patent for an invention he called the “Type-Writer.” Slate has assembled some compelling images of typewriters, alone and in use (with some rather well known personalities — John Updike, Ernest Hemingway, Louis Armstrong) in the days before desktop and laptop computers.
