When word spread that Mariah Carey got married to Nick Cannon on Eleuthera, the two questions on the minds of the twelve people who cared where: Who’s Nick Cannon? And what’s an Eleuthera? Turns out that the Times’ T Magazine not only praises Cannon in “Drumline” (that kid can really bang a snare), but has the savvy and chic to know all about Eleuthera.
Part of the Bahamas’ Out Islands, the sleepy, 110-mile long Eleuthera mostly gets upstaged by the more cosmopolitan Harbour Island, just off to the north. Whereas Harbour is all decorator inns and vanity shops opened by heiresses, Eleuthera is the land of bonefish anglers, dreadlocked surfer dudes and the few boho millionaires who hole up in their villas hoping to stay incognito. “Eleuthera, It’s Not for Everyone” is the local T-shirt slogan de jour. But the glitzlessness is exactly the reason to go — a big day on the island is a Kalik beer on Rainbow Beach, a conch fritter ordered off the blackboard at Tippy’s, and a turn through Elvina’s, the dive bar near Surfer’s Beach where you might catch Lenny Kravitz sitting in on a jam session.
