Shrines to the Afterlife
BldgBlog posted an other worldly collection of photos recently for an exhibition at Vienna’s Arkitekturzentrum that depicts images of “concrete skeletons of five-star hotel complexes” abandoned on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. The photographers claim these shrines look more like “architectonic sculptures” or “derelict abstractions, as if some aging and half-crazed billionaire had constructed an eccentric sculpture park for himself amongst the dunes.” In a land of incomparable religious history, these deserted ruins of leisure portend a vision of the afterlife somewhere between heaven and hell: bleak, hot, and timeless.
