Shine A Light

Steven Holden reviews Martin Scorsese’s reverential homage and rip-roaring documentary to the Rolling Stones in “Shine a Light” opening yesterday nationwide. We not only learn that “Mr. Scorsese is a besotted rock ’n’ roll fan who wholeheartedly embraces its mythology” with its scruffy guitar heroes and roustabout rebel-prophets as the musical equivalents of the hotheads and outlaws who populate so many of his films, but discover that upon scrutinizing the aging bodies of the Stone’s as “sinewy and lean, like longtime marathon runners” that “there is ample evidence that rock ‘n’ roll may hold the secret of eternal vitality, if not eternal beauty.”
