One Smart Paper: The Economist

The Economist wants to expand in America. But the “newspaper” may get stabbed in the back by the invisible hand it loves so much. It turns out there may not be any latent demand for exhaustingly comprehensive geopolitical news and paeans to the free market.

From MarketWatch:

“…The Economist has the goods, all right, to have lofty growth plans in the U.S. The only problem, though, is that there may not be enough smart people around who will want to read it.”

To cast The Economist as “smart people” reading is a little ridiculous, of course. Whether or not you enjoy it has more to do with your particular interests and endurance (and what’s “smartness” anyway?)

But it will be interesting to see if the magazine tries to sex itself up to broaden its appeal. What would Adam Smith do? [via good] [For the longer, smarter read -- Link]
