Anthony Minghella 1954 – 2008
Oscar-winning film director Anthony Minghella has died suddenly at the age of 54 succumbing to a fatal hemorrhage early Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith, west London. Minghella won an Oscar for “The English Patient” in 1997, and his credits also include “Cold Mountain” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” {On a personal note, the EA attended a seminar he appeared at in LA following the release of The English Patient and I found him to be articulate, interesting, warm, funny and completely original.}
Longtime friend David Puttnam paid tribute to Minghella’s career. “He was a really important figure. I’m really shattered,” he told BBC News shortly after learning of his death. “He was a really beautiful man, a lot of fun to be with. He was a storyteller in a classic British David Lean tradition.”
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said “He was one of Britain’s greatest creative talents, one of our finest screen writers and directors, a great champion of the British film industry and expert on literature and opera.”
