Be Kind Rewind
For Michel Gondry, “daily life is a series of art projects waiting to happen,” writes A.O. Scott. And that’s the message of his new movie, “Be Kind Rewind,” whose charm lies in its DIY spirit. The film — about a couple of nerdy amateurs (Mos Def and Jack Black) who remake all the movies in their local video store — is “inviting, undemanding and altogether wonderful,” Scott writes. “It is propelled by neither the psychology of its characters nor the machinery of its plot, but rather by a leisurely desire to pass the time, to see what happens next, to find out what would happen if you tried to re-enact ‘Ghostbusters’ in your neighbor’s kitchen.” Or, perhaps, in the Deitch Projects gallery, where the director has installed sets, costumes and a whole guerrilla movie-making system, complete with screening room, for you (and us!) to use. And ..action!
