Edwards and Giuliani Drop Out of Race
Democrat John Edwards and Republican Rudy Giuliani were abandoning their presidential bids on Wednesday, shrinking the field to two main candidates in each party.
The surprise announcement by Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was his party’s vice presidential nominee four years ago, left former first lady Hillary Clinton facing Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination in what seemed likely to be an long, bruising struggle.
Among Republicans, Arizona Sen. John McCain, who was expected to gain Giuliani’s endorsement, was the clear front-runner with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney his only strong challenger.
