For discriminating readers with cultivated tastes, this from one of my personal favorites, the elegant variation:

Michael Silverblatt’s superb end of year list is unlike many of the lists proliferating right now. To begin, he’s smart enough to call them his “favorites,” not some meaningless and abritrary designation of “best” - something that’s always driven us just a little bit crazy. And on top of that, he’s actually cited some interesting and different titles, not the same ten books you’re seeing from every media outlet.
