What better time than Halloween to investigate those things that go “bump in the night” and look at the runaway city dwellers who are setting up homes in rural utopia armed with pricey home-security systems complete with motion detectors, one-touch intercoms to fire and police dispatchers and an emergency hand-held remote-control device to protect themselves from the unthinkable.
Speaking from his country house on the outskirts of Amherst, Mass., Augusten Burroughs, author of the memoir “Running with Scissors,” quipped, “Our skinny, gym-polished urban bodies are no match for anything that scratches its back on a tree.”
